2017 Trend Spotter: Rosé Pineapples

Winter is upon us, and it’s fair to say many of us are already dreaming of Summer Fridays and weekends at the beach. If Summer 2015 was the summer of White Girl Rosé and Summer 2016 was the year of flamingo/donut/unicorn/ice cream cone/pizza pool floats, I’m here to predict that Summer 2017 will be the season of rosé pineapples.
What’s a rosé pineapple you ask? Well, my friend, it’s exactly what it sounds like: a regular old pineapple that has been genetically modified to appear pink. If you’re feeling technical, according to the FDA, Del Monte’s “new pineapple has been genetically engineered to produce lower levels of the enzymes already in conventional pineapple that convert the pink pigment lycopene to the yellow pigment beta carotene. Lycopene is the pigment that makes tomatoes red and watermelons pink, so it is commonly and safely consumed.”
And there you have it! If the FDA deems it safe, I think it’s fair to say that in the months to come our Instagram feeds will be full of these blushing fruits – everywhere from cocktail garnishes to fancy fruit salads. Summer 2017, here I come!
