Festivus For Not Quite the Rest of Us

Festivus For Not Quite the Rest of Us

Being the little eavesdropper that I am, I overheard an interesting story last week that I just couldn’t believe.  An Orange County inmate convinced a judge he was a practioner of Festivus, and therefore needed high-protein, Kosher meals instead of the standard prison cuisine.  I believed this about as much as I believe the Muddy River is a fine source for drinkable H2O; until I googled it to find the story all over the news.

I cannot believe this actually happened.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with Festivus, it is a holiday/religion introduced on the TV show, Seinfeld.  Part of Festivus is about eating good meals, so as a way of dodging sketchy prison food, inmate Malcolm Alarmo King pulled one over on not only his judge, but the entire Orange County prison… for several months!  How on earth is this possible?

When I realized the story was true, it brought me back to earlier this year, when word broke about Adam Wheeler, the mastermind who (almost) faked his way through Harvard.  I felt much the same then as I do now: confused.  Should I be worried  a man can convince an entire county prison to spend more than double the standard amount of money per meal with such ease?  Or should I be jaw-dropping impressed?  I don’t know America, I just don’t.  But what I do know, is that man is one Slick Rick if I’ve ever seen one.
