A Lesson on Privilege
This video really put things into perspective for me. I don’t always think about how lucky I am to have the life I was born into, and definitely do not think about the fact that I did absolutely nothing to deserve it. I don’t often think about what my life would be like if my skin was a different color, if I were raised in a different town, or if my parents, friends and community didn’t give me all of the tools I needed to succeed.
“We don’t want to recognize that we’ve been given a head start. But the reality is we have”
I am extremely fortunate to have had everything I have in my life so far. Sure, I work hard, and my family works hard, but even though we worked hard and continue to work hard, we have such an unfair advantage in this world.
“Nothing you’ve done has put you in the lead right now”
I think this video really simplifies a complex topic. It’s hard to talk about and even harder to wrap your head around when it’s not something you have to deal with on a day-to-day basis. This video is a reminder to take a second and think about how someone else’s life might hold a whole lot more than you could ever image and, in the end, you never know what someone else is going through or has gone through until you hear their whole story.
“They still gotta run their race. You still gotta run your race.”
