A Real Life Disney Tale

Here’s a story that would warm even the coldest of hearts. It’s so sweet that it’s almost unbelievable. If Disney made a movie about it you would call it hokey and lame. However, it’s somehow true.
It’s the story of Dindim the penguin and Joao Pereira de Souza, a 71 year old retired bricklayer from Brazil.
Four years ago, Dindim washed up on a beach near Pereira’s home covered in oil and barely alive. Pereira washed the oil off, fed Dindim and nursed him back to health. After a week or so he went to release Dindim back into the sea.
If the story ended there it would simply be a cute little tale about a nice old man who rescued a penguin. It doesn’t though (but you knew that). Nope, instead of leaving, Dindim stayed with Pereira.
Now maybe you think Dindim simply didn’t know how to get home, but you’d be wrong. After 11 months Dindim took off. Everyone said that the penguin was gone and Pereira would never see him again.
Wrong again! Incredibly, this penguin showed back up a few months later. He found Pereira on the beach and followed him home, hanging around for eight months before taking off again.
Researchers say Dindim swims all the way to the coast of Argentina and Chile, 3,000-5,000 miles away, to breed for a few months and then comes back to Brazil to hang out with Pereira.
Think about the commitment and loyalty that takes. A 5,000 mile swim for this tiny bird. All so he can get back to his friend who saved his life. I was already a fan of penguins but they just vaulted to the top of my favorite animal list after this. Disney, your move.
