A Whopping Marketing Fail

According to Burger King, the 2018 World Cup champions are not the only ones eligible for a reward. On Tuesday, the Russian division of Burger King announced their newest promotion on VK (Russian Facebook): a lifetime supply of Whoppers along with a cash prize of three million rubles ($47,000) to women who get impregnated by World Cup football stars. Their overall goal? To pass down the best football genes to future Russian generations!

Translated to English the above advertisement reads: “Burger King, within the framework of responsibility, has appointed a reward for girls who get pregnant from the stars of world football… Each will receive 3 million rubles and a lifelong supply of Whoppers. For these girls, it will be possible to get the best football genes and will lay down the success of the Russian national team on several generations. Forward! We believe in you!”.

Of course, this campaign was a whopping failure that suffered severe backlash. Burger King responded by releasing a formal apology stating all campaign content had been removed because “it turned out to be too insulting.” What a surprise!
