A Wild Year
With January now in full swing, the hype around the 2017 “Game of the Year” award is still in the air. During their annual award ceremony, The Game Awards announced the title winner as “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” and rightfully so! It has earned an enormous amount of positive feedback from players and game reviewers. Released in early March, the action-adventure game sold 1.3 million units in a month. More units were sold during the month of its release than of their newest console, Nintendo Switch, which was released the same day.
With the astonishing graphics and extensive content, it is no wonder Breath of the Wild was Nintendo’s fastest selling launch. Entertainment media company IGN reviewed the game as “evocative, exhilarating, and a masterclass in open-world design.” It has been credited as Nintendo’s best produced game in decades, also winning titles for Best Direction and Best Action-Adventure. Super Mario Odyssey was credited as runner up for “Game of the Year,” proving Nintendo’s 2017 success.
While some define it as “overrated,” others believe the game is the best of the Zelda series. Each game play is unique to the player, as they make decisions and explore the massive open-world map. With a little endurance, the adventures in this game are worthy of its award.
