Arrivederci! I’m Moving To Italy

Great food, wine, art, fashion and history – there is a lot to love about Italy. If you’re like me, you’ve dreamed about moving to the Tuscan countryside to live a simple life of pasta, wine and cheese. But if a long-term commitment is too much for you, how about just three months’ sabbatical in the village of Grottole in the south of Italy? And the best part of it – Airbnb will sponsor it!

That’s right: four lucky people will get to live like a local for three months and experience authentic rural life in the small Italian village with Airbnb picking up the tab. During their stay, they will be temporary citizens of the village and volunteer with Wonder Grottole, a non-profit aiming to preserve the town’s historical center. They’ll get to explore the 10th century castle atop the village, pick produce straight from vegetable gardens and see the wine cellars from which the village got its name (“grotta” means “cave” in Italian).

In addition to immersing themselves into the Grottole community, the four people chosen for the sabbatical will host Airbnb Experiences to educate tourists on local life in Grottole through educational classes and events. The hope is to help revitalize the small village of 300 inhabitants. With more than 600 empty homes, Grottole is at risk of disappearing.

So, if you’re inspired to save the village and get a break from your current situation, you have until February 17 to apply for a chance for an Italian sabbatical. Ciao!
