Be GELous of My New Tips
At first, I was hesitant to drop over $40 MORE than usual to experience the latest nail trend: soak-off gel nail polish. Well, I took the plunge and did it anyway. If you’re not familiar with it, this is basically a heavy duty nail polish (OPI’s Axxium is the new brand most salons are using) that lasts for 2 to 3 weeks. It’s so hard that you need to go back to the salon to “soak” the paint off. My technician actually told me just to peel the polish off once it starts to look crappy. God, I bet that’s going to damage my nails…but we’ll see!
Here’s a basic overview of the process. Nails are filed, buffed and cuticles are trimmed > basecoat is applied on the nails > UV light hardens the basecoat > gel color is painted on > UV light hardens color > 2nd coat of gel color is applied > color hardens some more under the light > top coat is applied > hardens even more! So, as you can tell, the process takes some time but I think it’s worth it. I made a mistake and picked a bad color that’s just blah (don’t go with “Bubble Bath”) but my nails look shiny and I can’t wait to not have to get my nails done again for weeks. I read that you can even paint a regular polish over the gel color and take that top color off with nail polish remover without screwing up the gel manicure underneath! I think I’m hooked. Hefty price tag and all!
By the way, I wasn’t thrilled with the salon I visited for my treatment so I’d recommended hittin’ up SalonCapri. They offer the gel application for $40-$60 and it takes about an hour (available at their Newton Highlands and the new Dedham Legacy Place locations).
