Black Friday on Toast
Brace yourself – Black Friday has arrived! Because my birthday tends to fall around this time, I love dragging my father to the mall in Vermont on the day after Thanksgiving. Good deals, crazy crowds…it’s a shopaholic’s dream!
This also marks the favorite time of year for advertisers and marketers, who will be vying for your attention long after Black Friday ends. The media industry actually refers to the eight weeks leading up to Christmas as “the hard eight,” because the sheer volume of advertising that takes place during this time. Naturally, companies pull out all of the stops to get consumers into their stores. Desire a 50 inch plasma HDTV for less than $600? Head to Wal-Mart. How about a laptop for less than $300? Staples is the place to go. Got an urge to shop at midnight? Disney is opening more than 125 stores nationwide offering $5, $10, and $15 gifts, which will be even cheaper with an additional 20% discount applied.
This year, IKEA is taking Black Friday one step further. Not only is the chain retailer offering amazing deals (6 wine glasses for $1.99… really!?) but the Swedish furniture conglomerate is also offering one small breakfast and one cup of coffee to every customer who arrives before 10:30am! We’re all suckers for a good sale (and good food), so I’m sure the die-hard IKEA fans (those who look forward to hours of furniture assembly with Swedish instructions and a glass of wine in hand) will have been in line since yesterday.
So today you can find me at the mall taking advantage of all that Black Friday has to offer. Of course, I’ll be dragging my dad along. I’m sure it won’t be hard to convince him to stop at IKEA… he’s a sucker for a free breakfast!
