Could She BE Any More perfect?

I’m starting to think Emma Watson can do no wrong. Not only was she the strong and charming Hermione in the eight Harry Potter movies, a humble student at both Brown and Oxford, and a style icon, but she is now a U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador.
The triple (quadruple?) threat delivered an impassioned speech on feminism and gender earlier this month at the U.N. headquarters in New York, launching the HeForShe campaign. The campaign aims to galvanize one billion men and boys as advocates for ending gender inequality. As Watson makes clear, this is the first campaign of its kind at the U.N. – and frankly a new idea to a lot of men.
Now, more about that speech. Though spoken with somewhat of a shaky delivery, Watson’s speech was met with thunderous applause and a standing ovation. She not only addressed the need for male allies in her new campaign, but also clarified a common misconception about feminism – man-hating. “My recent research has shown me that ‘feminism’ has become an unpopular word,” she explained. “Women are choosing not to identify as feminists … Why has the word become such an unpopular one?”
The message of the HeForShe campaign is straightforward: “A Solidarity Movement for Gender Equality.” As Watson stated, “Men, I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue, too.”
With over four million views on YouTube in just a few days, Watson’s speech has gotten a lot of attention. No doubt her passion and charisma will help the HeForShe campaign takeoff – hopefully, with the help of men everywhere.
