Crème de la Crème
Close your eyes and picture waking up to rolling hills and pristine pastures—the sun is shining, birds are chirping and you know your day will start with breakfast served from a $150,000 computerized unit that has crafted a customized diet plan to suit your body type. You feel calm and at peace with the world knowing that the rest of your day will consist of a variety of spa treatments and maybe an afternoon stroll around the farm.
Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? Yeah, it does… ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE A FREAKEN COW.
Allow me to back track a little. It was recently brought to my attention that George Malkemus and Tony Yurgaitis, two top executives from the luxury brand Manolo Blahnik, started selling pricey branded milk and yogurt from their 325-acre farm, Arethusa, in Litchfield County, CT. At roughly $4.49 per half-gallon, the milk sells at more than twice the national retail average.
It came as no surprise to find out that these haute-heifers have it MADE. Above their humble abode a sign reads: “Every cow in this barn is a lady, please treat her as such.” And it doesn’t stop there. The 375 cows enjoy the finest, protein-enriched hay and are fed customized blends from individual food dispensers suspended from the barn’s ceiling. They sleep on soft wood shavings imported from Canada, and workers vacuum their bodies on a daily basis in a “spa-like” room to ensure that there is not a single fly pestering the prize-winning cattle. Naturally, their coats and tails are treated with the same beauty products women use, with brands such as Artec and Pantene being the two favored choices.
Expanding their dairy empire, Malkemus and Yurgaitis recently unveiled their $5 million high-tech processing facility in Bantam, CT which also contains a retail space where they sell ice cream, a variety of cheeses and yogurt. While the price of the lux milk is hard to swallow for most, I have a feeling our good friend Ms. Suri Cruise is going to be requesting samples to pack for school lunches very shortly…
