Detox Teas No More: Instagram Cracks Down on Weight Loss Products

If you’ve spent time on Instagram, you’ve likely noticed a countless number of weight loss “quick fixes,” like detox teas and supplements being promoted by Kardashians and reality stars constantly, much to the disapproval of many. Well, it looks like Instagram has been listening. The photo sharing app recently announced a new policy that would censor, and in some cases remove, content that promotes weight loss products or cosmetic procedures to users under the age of 18. The censorship is not only exclusive to Instagram but its sister platform, Facebook, as well. According to a Buzzfeed News article, users who are known to be minors will be restricted from viewing posts that promote the use of certain weight loss products and cosmetic procedures, or posts that have an incentive for users to buy products or include a price.
With Instagram being the hub for many influencers, this new policy could affect the way they partner with brands and the amount of engagement their content receives. But putting an age limit on posts won’t totally stop them from promoting a product, since influencers are still able to post to their Instagram Stories.
We all want the internet to be a safer space and we’re all about body positivity, but age-restricting brand deals that include “Flat Tummy Teas” or cosmetic procedures doesn’t get rid of the problem completely. However, at least there’s something being done to help eliminate the harmful messages being spread on social media. Good on ya, Instagram!
