Electric Scooters Are Coming

For those of you Greater Boston locals who frequent across-the-river (I’m talking about Cambridge and Somerville, in case you didn’t know), you’ll probably remember the BIRD Scooter fiasco of 2018. The California-based company dumped a bunch of their convenient electric scooters in the two towns last summer to the joy of many millennial residents. City officials and everyone over the age of 60, however, were less than pleased about the “nuisance” they had become. So, these helpful little personal vehicles went the way of plastic bags and were banned.
It appears that, along with a plethora CBD-infused things, 2019 has brought a change in attitude toward the scooters in some areas. Brookline, of all places, has decided to allow them starting next month! The city of Boston, despite its relative progressiveness, has yet to be convinced that these little guys could help alleviate all the traffic congestion problems the city has been complaining about. Apparently, in a meeting of top city officials earlier this month, it was decided that the electric scooters would automatically shut down if someone were to cross over the Brookline/Boston city line – SERIOUSLY!
If all goes well in Brookline, how long do you think it will take for other Boston-area locales to change their tune?
