Elf On The Shelf
One of my favorite holiday traditions is hiding my Elf on the Shelf. Don’t get me wrong, I love trimming the tree, watching Home Alone, seeing The Nutcracker and opening doors on the Advent calendar, but nothing comes close to my adoration for the Elf on the Shelf. (And no, for anyone asking…I don’t have an elf fetish.)
Each year while I was growing up, my mom would bring out the Elf (which back in her day used to come on soapboxes during the holiday season) and tell me how he would fly back to the North Pole every night and report to Santa if I was a good girl or a bad girl (please note that at age 8 I had quite the mouth and wasn’t afraid to use it—so this was clearly a scare tactic). The next morning when I would wake up, I’d have to search around the house to find the Elf’s new location. He’d be on my dresser, hidden in the Christmas tree, on the piano—the harder to find, the better.
Now that I’m no longer at home for the holiday season, my husband and I have our own Elf on the Shelf (thanks, mom!) and together we have reached new levels of creativity in our hiding places—think inside the medicine cabinet, inside the refrigerator, hanging from a clothes hanger in the closet, etc…you get the idea. We take great delight (probably too much) in seeing how long it takes the other to find him!
If you haven’t before heard of the Elf on the Shelf, you are in luck! The Elf on the Shelf is sold online through its official website—yes, the Elf is web-savvy—as well as in select bookstores. The elves of the 21st century can even be purchased in the female form AND in different races. ‘Tis the season to be politically correct!
