Explore More On The Gram

In case you don’t keep tabs on the world of social media like we do, our friends at Instagram have been continuously rolling out and testing new features to keep users interested and continue their reign as the one of the top apps in the world (it came in as #2, right behind YouTube, in 2018 for iPhones).
Inarguably the biggest recent update was the launch of in-app shopping back in March, elevating the ‘gram to a whole new level as a legit competitor of e-commerce giants like Amazon. Since the initial launch, the number of brands supported by the shop feature has grown, and it shows no signs of slowing down.
More recently, Instagram raised eyebrows by testing out hiding “likes” on the app, which would completely change how the success of influencer marketing is measured (sponsored posts are often judged by the number of likes and number of comments). As Zuckerberg said in his keynote at the Facebook Developer Conference earlier this year, “We want people to be less interested in how many likes a post gets, and focus more on connecting with other people.” I, for one, don’t hate the idea. I’d love to see influencer marketing focus more on the quality of content than how many people decided to double-tap.
The newest announcement by Insta is a revamp of the “Explore” page (the magnifying glass button at the bottom of your screen), which introduced a new navigation bar with shortcuts for Shopping and IGTV (two features Instagram is putting a lot of focus on), and categories for Style, Food, Travel, Animals and more. Stories will also now show up on the Explore page, increasing the chance that they will be seen by others (good news for brands and influencers investing a lot of time in Stories, which they should be!). The goal of the facelift is to show you more of what you are interested in seeing on the app, and make it even easier to find things to buy (apologies to my bank account in advance).
Whether or not you like the direction Instagram is heading – you better get on board because it is only going up from here!
