Goodbye Chucks, Hello TOMS!
Given the option, I’ll take a pair of Chucks over high heels any day. I can’t help it—I like to be comfortable and now thanks to TOMS shoes, I can be trendy (and charitable) too!
TOMS stepped onto the scene in 2006 when Blake Mycoskie, an American traveler, befriended a group of children in Argentina. With no shoes to protect their feet, they suffered from cuts and sores, which could easily be infected. Shocked, concerned, and most importantly inspired, Blake returned home and started ‘Shoes for Tomorrow’ (later shortened to TOMS shoes). His revolutionary One for One Movement, in which a pair of shoes is donated to children in need for every pair purchased, helped donate 10,000 shoes after the first year to those children in Argentina. Now, three years later, TOMS shoes will donate upwards of 300,000 pairs of shoes in 2009 alone.
And TOMS isn’t alone. Ralph Lauren’s Rugby and TOMS have teamed up to make co-branded espadrilles. Rugby matches and gives one pair for every pair sold. The skateboard company Element joined forces with TOMS to create a one for one skateboard program. For every TOMS + Element skateboard and pair of shoes sold, one of each is donated to the Indigo Skate Camp, outside Durban, Africa. With the support of these influential companies and caring customers, TOMS is helping build a better tomorrow.
