Has the Grinch Kidnapped Santa?
The cookies and milk may be next to the tree and the stockings hung with care, but Santa’s making no guarantees he’ll be shimmying down your chimney this year! With economic times in disarray, even Santa Claus—the universal symbol of gift giving—is hedging his bets. The Huffington Post recently reported that mall Santas are specifically being trained to let the little ones know they may not be getting that new (and pricey) Power Wheels Dune Racer, retailing at $270, because mom and dad just can’t afford it.
Apparently this year’s Santa Claus School graduates (Why, yes, Virginia, there really is a Santa Claus School!) are encouraged to size up families in line to determine economic standing prior to making any promises to the kids. Spun by Santa’s PR Elves as “managing expectations” of the children, isn’t this really just a socially conscious way to steal a kid’s Christmas spirit? It’s Santa’s job to instill hope and bring joy to children over the holidays; whether the kids are getting all of the toys on their wish list is really not included in Santa’s job description.
So when visiting the mall this holiday season, expect dreams to be shattered, kids to be crying and anticipation of Christmas morning to be at an all-time low. But hey—look at the bright side—while Santas may be taking away the Christmas spirit, at least they’re still giving out candy canes!
