Holiday Marketing Fail

Nothing says the holidays like getting secretly drugged by your best friend… or a creepy guy throwing you some serious side eye, amIright? #wrong #sowrong

This year, the Bloomingdale’s holiday catalog features the copy, “Spike your best friend’s eggnog when they’re not looking,” which many are calling out for having serious sexual-harassment undertones. And I agree… particularly when paired with the photo above. What I find most surprising about major advertisements that contain inappropriate messaging (looking at you Bud Light “Up for Whatever”) is the number of people that must have seen, heard, commented on and approved it before it reached consumers…

Advertisers, marketers, publicists, teenagers, everyone everywhere needs to remember that social media is an unforgiving platform. You can’t get away with a mistake like this anymore – one sentence of copy in a catalog can bring an entire company under scrutiny. Bloomingdale’s has failed to comment on the company’s policies for reviewing advertisement or details on who is getting fired over this one, but they did issue an apology saying, “In reflection of recent feedback, the copy we used in our current catalog was inappropriate and in poor taste. Bloomingdale’s sincerely apologizes for this error in judgment.” OK, fine. Apology accepted, now how much is that skirt? I must have it.
