Get ready for an a-peeling toy update — everyone’s favorite spud, Mr. Potato Head, has gone gender-neutral! Well, kind of. Hasbro recently announced the rebranding of their iconic ‘Mr. Potato Head’ toy. The brand is officially dropping the ‘Mr.’ in an effort to break away from traditional gender norms, particularly when it comes to creating Potato Head families.

The company stated, “Hasbro is making sure all feel welcome in the Potato Head world by officially dropping the Mr. from the Mr. Potato Head brand name and logo to promote gender equality and inclusion.” Although the brand is changing, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head will still be available for purchase, and the names will appear on the boxes.

Several other toy companies, including Hasbro competitor Mattel, have been rebranding in order to abide by changing cultural norms. For example, Mattel’s Barbie has added more body-inclusive and racially diverse dolls within the last five years.

While some may scoff and deem these rebrands unnecessary, diverse options help build an diverse toy box. Interactive play with these toys can expose kids to valuable lessons about inclusivity at an early age. Starting in the fall, kiddos will be able to create same-sex families, single-parent families, and more with their Potato Head pals!
