After launching in 2008, Spotify quickly began to dominate the world of streaming, changing the way we listen to music in a world where Apple ruled the roost. Perhaps one of Spotify’s most notorious features is Spotify Wrapped, a free insight into each artist and user’s streaming data, offering a summary of their listening habits with eye-popping graphics and customized playlists.
Spotify introduced their Wrapped feature in 2017 and has virtually broken the internet each December since. Spotify relies on free marketing as their users take to social media platforms to share their musical year in review. Pretty soon, Instagram feeds are flooded with users’ Spotify Wrapped, giving non-Spotify users FOMO. The graphics are popping up so much on Instagram that memes have surfaced, the below ridiculing Apple Music for Spotify’s domination.

Wrapped has garnered worldwide acclaim and is regarded by many as one of the greatest marketing campaigns of the decade. By capitalizing on the way people consider their music taste to be a part of their identity, Spotify has both attracted new users to their service and pleased existing ones. Plus, they give us something to look forward to at the end of the year — something we all need right now.
