Every year, Google releases its annual “Year In Search,” a video that recaps the events, moments and people that resonated most with the world. It also highlights the questions that were most commonly searched on Google  that year. The question that was most searched in 2020? Not surprisingly: why?

Not only does the video bring back some cuh-razy memories (the Oscars were this year?!) but shows the numerous struggles, heartbreaking moments and life-altering events that we faced. Narrator Kofi Lost, a Boston-based musician and poet begins the video, “The most human trait, is to want to know why. And in a year that tested everyone around the world, why was searched more than ever.”

The three-minute film highlights the things that made us scared, from the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic to the wildfires in California to the racism that permeated our country. It gives us hope, with surreal images of Black Lives Matter protesters marching together, RBG and her forever wisdom, and of course, the long-awaited COVID-19 vaccine as it’s distributed across the world. The video also beautifully illustrates the things that brought us together, from TikTok (does everyone remember the oven kid and his Trombone-playing dad?!) to the death of Black Panther’s Chadwick Boseman to our collective work-from-home Zooming.
