Michelle Obama + Puppets = Our Next Netflix Binge

As a childless 30+ year old millennial I am unashamedly excited for binge watching Netflix’s newest series: Waffles + Mochi. Starring former First Lady (and forever BA) Michelle Obama and her two trusty puppet sidekicks (the aforementioned Waffles + Mochi), the show continues Obama’s mission of educating children about the importance of food education. Paired with celebrity cameos, it’s giving me Sesame Street-meets-Salt Fat Acid Heat vibes (probably because the SFAH team is behind this).
Waffles, a quirky blue puppet, and Moji, an adorable pink rice cake, travel across the globe learning how to become “chefs extraordinaire” from food experts and celebrities like José Andrés, Rashida Jones, Common, and more. Can I travel the world with this crew, too?!
While I am assuredly not the show’s target demographic, the message is important to all of us. Understanding where food comes from (other than the grocery store) and how it is made will help build the next generation of food industry leaders. Food is a vital part of our obvious survival and identities. Understanding global flavors and differences in cultural preparations gives us as the audience a glimpse into how others think and survive – and just skims the surface of the environmental impact of food production.
Here’s to hoping this show inspires us all to appreciate the dedication and grit that goes into our food industry across the world, this year more than ever. Can’t wait to tune in to learn and grow March 16th!
