Modelland: The Fiercest Place on Earth

In case you didn’t hear, Tyra Banks recently announced her plans to build a new modeling theme park that will also be a mall — because like her, all of her projects must be multi-purpose. It will be called – wait for it – Modelland.
For more context, Modelland is also a book that Tyra Banks wrote. My new favorite thing in the world is this description I’ve pulled from Amazon:
“Modelland – the FIERCE NEW NOVEL BY TYRA BANKS—IS OUT!
No one gets in without being asked. And with her untamable hair, large forehead, and gawky body, Tookie De La Crème isn’t expecting an invitation. Modelland—the exclusive, mysterious place on top of the mountain—never dares to make an appearance in her dreams.
But someone has plans for Tookie. Before she can blink her mismatched eyes, Tookie finds herself in the very place every girl in the world obsesses about. And three unlikely girls have joined her.”
And that’s not even the whole thing!
“It’s my calling to bring modeling to the masses,” Banks shared with WWD about the park she says she’s been working on for the last decade. Her inspiration comes from Disneyland, a place she often visited as a child.
Though it’s still a little unclear as to what this will all look like, Modelland will be anchored around a mall, the most permanent attraction.
As someone who has watched all 15 cycles of America’s Next Top Model (thanks Hulu), millennials in particular are aware of the moments that in hindsight are pretty problematic and definitely would not fly today. Then again, Tyra is known for her Tyra-isms and has offered a lot to pop culture; she’s behind “fierce” (and all its incarnations, including “fierceness”), which became so played out in addition to “smize,” or smiling with your eyes.
I am currently rolling my eyes.
Either way, this announcement came as extremely bizarre and I’m interested to see how it all unfolds. After all, Disneyland perfected the art of full on immersion in other worlds, so let’s see if Modelland comes out on top. Pun fully intended.
