Newton Gets Coffee Cultured
Confessions of a caffeine addict…I’m always on the lookout for a delicious fix. Recently two new cafes have opened in my hood, Newton — both are worth the trip to Mass Pike exit 17.
First, the always popular La Aroma Café on Newbury Street had been rumoring a West Newton offshoot for almost a year. A couple of months ago, they celebrated their grand opening. Complete with comfy/cozy seating area and tea room, on-premise bakery churning out scrumptious breads and pastries and the same fine-quality true Italian barista techniques we’ve grown to love in Boston — La Aroma Newton got it right with a roomier space, parking and a shorter line.

Store Hours: Mon-Fri 7:30am – 6 pm, Sat 9am – 6pm, Sun 12pm – 6pm
And, in Newtonville, Taste Coffee House has opened, daringly close to the neighborhood Starbucks. When raising this question with the cashier last week, it seems they are fairly confident that the Newton audience would rather support a young, local business as opposed to Sbux. Though I’d argue there are exceptions to that rule (I’m not one of them), Taste does lives up to its name and has been consistently busy since opening. I gloss over at the mention of locally-sourced, community-oriented, eco-conscious, so I won’t elaborate on their brand promise, but the shop is committed to rotating an exciting and varied selection of coffees representing a diverse taste palette outside of the same ol’ cup of joe. I don’t know what it is, their Synesso machine or roasting technique, but the coffee is intensely rich and flavorful — delicious! Highly recommended is their Dirty Chai — traditional chai latte prepared with espresso.
