Photo Opp In An App

How many photos of friends posing in front of Nashville’s “WhatLiftsYou” wings mural have you come across on your Insta feed in the past year? What about Acorn Street in Boston or the Bean in Chicago? The answer: too many to count. There’s a reason so many people flock to these hot spots for the perfect photo — they are visually appealing and social-media friendly (aka guaranteed to rack up the likes).
Move over historical sites and top-rated restaurants — the new travel trend is to find the most Instagrammable locations, put on your cutest outfit, and pose away! (Don’t forget to heavily edit before posting, of course). A new app called Depalo (launched by an influencer, of course), has set out to make it easier to find the most Insta-worthy spots in every popular locale. Each destination links to Google maps for directions, features tips for making the most of your trip, and showcases photos from influencers at that location.
Notable Boston spots include tourist faves like Acorn Street, the Harborwalk, the Public Garden bridge and the Boston Public Library, along with heavily-‘grammed restaurants and shops like Tatte Bakery and Niche Urban Garden. As of now there are only twelve cities on the app (with around a dozen spots each), but according to CNN, Depalo will add a new city each week.
Though I can see the appeal to this app, I wonder — will this just encourage more and more people to post photos at the same spots? If the app continues to add and update to stay current and our feeds aren’t inundated with the same millennial pink couch, we say it’s a win!
