Scared Shitless to Sunscreen

I don’t have to tell you why we should all wear sunscreen. We’ve heard the statistics and, probably more effective, seen living, breathing examples like the Tanning Mom and this hot mess. That said, it’s safe to say that most of us (myself included…until now) operate in disbelief of such dangers. Maybe we think it can’t happen to us—I moisturize daily!—or we’d rather look good today and worry about Botox tomorrow.

Well, if ever there was a perfect reason to slather on the sunscreen daily, it’s this guy. No, you’re not looking at a digitally altered photograph. This is the very real face of a 69-year-old man recently featured in the New England Journal of Medicine—a frightening, albeit eye-opening, look at how damaging the sun actually is. A truck driver for 28 years, the man consistently had the left side of his face exposed to the sun, while his right side was not. He didn’t slick himself down with tanning oil and lay out to fry like so many do; he simply did his job, unaware of the effects it might have. Today, the left side of his face looks much older than the right, arguably by about 15-20 years.

Sadly, this is the first time I’ve given much [serious] thought to how my love for the sun may affect my appearance. Luckily, I already use a foundation with built-in SPF 15, but thanks to this poor fellow, my awareness just shot through the roof.

Talk about a wake-up call.
