What Goes Around…

Shoulder Pads?I was recently in NYC checking out what the top contemporary designers were selling for Fall 2009. I stopped to look at the offerings of one pretty hip line and the rep pulls out a cotton tee to show me and it had shoulder pads! It was as cute as ever but I shook my head in disbelieve. Are they for real? The next week I was flipping through Women’s Wear Daily and saw an article about the clothing line, Three Dots, changing direction and lowering their prices a bit. The example piece from the line was of a soon-to-be-launched $75 open-neck T-shirt accentuated with quilted shoulder pads. Again! I can’t believe there’s a huge possibility that the 80’s trend was going to come back this fall!

It’s amazing how trends go in cycles. Just last month I was rummaging through my parents’ basement looking for my old ripped up and paint-splattered Abercrombie jeans that I could wear again to replicate the “boyfriend” jean look. When Rachel Bilson and other celebs starting wearing oversized 80’s boyfriend blazers and stirrup pants and neon colors starting popping up everywhere, I promised myself I would no longer throw away my old stuff. It really is true – what goes around, comes around! Hang onto all those funky clothing and accessory items you have that you think may no longer be “in.” Give it at least 10 years and they just may be back…and better than ever!
