Show Me Your…Teeth
While us Bostonians enjoy the World Cup by day drinking and making fools of ourselves, women in South Africa are enduring an entirely different emotion. In a country that has one of the highest rape rates in the world and one in 20 men admit to having raped in the past year, serious moves are being made to put an end to this violence. Enter Dr. Sonnet Ehlers, a South African doctor who has created the latest defense: Rape-aXe.
Rape-aXe, a latex condom with jagged rows of teeth-like hooks on the inside, is inserted much like a tampon would be. Should a woman be attacked, her assailant will find himself instantly barbed, in excruciating pain, and unable to walk or urinate. Only a doctor and surgical procedure can remove the device, and Dr. Ehlers hopes this will both dissuade would-be rapists and encourage police at hospitals to arrest the guilty.
Roughly 30,000 devices were distributed for free by Ehlers and her team throughout the cities where World Cup celebrations are taking place, and after this, Rape-aXe will sell for $2. This comes at a time where women already go to great lengths to protect themselves from violence. Many wear extra tight bike shorts or hide razor blades within sponges inside their bodies to feel more secure.
While it certainly has its critics, some even calling the product “medieval,” Dr. Ehlers makes a great argument: “Yes, my device may be a medieval, but it’s for a medieval deed that has been around for decades,” she said. “I believe something’s got to be done … and this will make some men rethink before they assault a woman.”
