It’s no secret that more people are relying less and less on Facebook as a means to communicate with friends and acquaintances. I have found that I know more about my friend’s cousin’s brother than I ever needed to, and my feed is filled more with memes and Buzzfeed quizzes than meaningful posts and life updates.

And Facebook knows that its users are less engaged than they were a few years ago. So it has taken a shot at competing with one of the largest photo and video sharing platforms ever, Snapchat. Now, I admit, when Snapchat first surfaced, I thought it was a short-lived sexting app. But now, over two and a half years after its launch, Snapchat is being used more than ever (back in November, over 400 million “snaps” were being sent every day). Facebook’s solution is Slingshot, an app pretty much identical to Snapchat except for one little detail – you have to send a photo or video to receive one. Why? According to its creators,

“With Slingshot, we wanted to build something where everybody is a creator and nobody is just a spectator. When everyone participates, there’s less pressure, more creativity and even the little things in life can turn into awesome shared experiences.”

I’m no tech expert, but I’d say that most people are pretty invested in Snapchat to switch over to Slingshot (plus, many people just like to “spectate” *cough* all my friends *cough*). Slingshot DOES, however, connect you with your Facebook friends, which widens the audience that you can send your quick shots to (which should definitely appeal to those serial selfie-takers).
