“Someone Great” is Something Great

Every few years, a movie comes along that you connect with so perfectly, it becomes an instant classic. Well, that’s exactly what happened to me recently after watching Netflix’s new romcom Someone Great. The relatability of the entire movie had my roommate and I screaming “WHY IS THIS US!” at the TV like madwomen.
The film follows 20-something Jenny Young (Gina Rodriguez) who is facing a job change that will require her to move across the country, a breakup with her longtime boyfriend and the reality of growing up. Jenny is determined to have one final crazy night in the city with her two best friends (Brittany Snow and DeWanda Wise), and throughout the night all three are forced to deal with their emotions and own life struggles and triumphs. There are many twists and turns along the way, but that’s life.
And the soundtrack, y’all. Talk about legendary. I’ve had “Truth Hurts” by Lizzo on repeat for DAYS because of this movie. If you haven’t heard it and want to feel like a confident badass, I highly recommend giving it a listen. The score also features jams that perfectly mirror the storyline from other female icons such as Billie Eilish and Beyoncé.
Exploring the emotions of heartbreak, commitment issues and the overwhelming fear of settling, the movie hits home for many millennials like myself. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry (well, I cried, but I cry at everything), and you’ll want to hug your best friend tight. The reality of growing up and moving on is apart of life, but this movie makes you stop and appreciate the crazy nights dancing around your kitchen with your best friends before going to the club and enjoy love for what it is or was. Someone Great really is something great, and I highly recommend!
