Like many third grade girls of the late 90’s, I had an acute case of Spice Girl fever. I danced around my living room, “Wannabe” blaring from my Walkman headphones. I owned all of their merchandise, from ChapStick to t-shirts to their very sought-after set of figurines. I even celebrated my ninth birthday with a Spice Girls theme and dressed up as Sporty Spice, complete with slicked-back, high ponytail and those Adidas pants that snapped up the side (you know you wore them!). So imagine the giddiness my 10 year-old self experienced when I heard about the creation of a musical based on the British pop girl group that I idolized in my early years (whether or not I like to admit it). Mamma Mia! producer Judy Craymer is behind the musical, which is written by comedian Jennifer Saunders.

Though Saunders once mocked the feisty girl group in a tribute act called Sugar Lumps, she is completely serious about Viva Forever! becoming a hit on stage, just as Mamma Mia! was. She told Huffington Post that the musical aims to capture “the joy that they brought, their energy and their positivity.”

Viva Forever! was announced by all five former superstars, as well as Craymer and Saunders, in the neo-Gothic hotel where the video for “Wannabe” — the hit that put them on the map — was filmed. Sadly, the musical is not set to make its way to the States. Previews begin November 27 and opening night is December 11 at the Piccadilly Theatre in London.

The way I see it, if Legally Blonde can see success as a musical, there’s no reason this tale of friendship, family and stardom can’t follow suit. Or, it could just as easily be laughed at by critics and audiences. I guess we’ll have to wait and see!
