In case you decided to hibernate for the latter part of 2017 (and I don’t blame you), a new Star Wars film – Star Wars: The Last Jedi – was released just before the holiday. In true Star Wars fashion, the film sparked quite a frenzy, with fans everywhere sharing their thoughts online.

In a scene from the film, Kylo Ren (played by Adam Driver) wore high-waisted black pants with no shirt. And suddenly, the Internet turned it into a meme (because that’s what they do). John Mayer posted a photo of himself shirtless with black high-waisted pants and the hashtag #KyloRenChallenge — and many people — followed suit. However, according to Know Your Meme (which has done an impressive amount of research on memes), Instagram user @lazar0d1az was the first to reference the hashtag, a whole week before John Mayer popularized it. Additionally, several men posted photos of themselves inspired by Kylo’s look right after the film debuted in December.

You can check out more uses of the hashtag here:

If anything is to be learned from this, it’s that anything can be turned into a meme. I am both curious and frightened to see what’s to come in 2018…
