Swiping and Swinging Right

A Dirty Dancing spoof, a Jeff Bezos cameo, a Morgan Freeman vs Peter Dinklage lip sync battle – the list goes on of the comedic yet classic Superbowl stunts that us marketing junkies look forward to rejoicing over (or ripping apart) between touchdowns. Yet this year, the Clydesdale horses aren’t the only ones making a grand debut. The coy social networking app Bumble will be launching a yearlong campaign called “The Ball is in Her Court” starring tennis pro and overall goddess, Serena Williams. This saucy campaign will emphasize the brand’s message – girls can run the world.
My initial reaction to this partnership was “YES,” quickly followed by some hesitation. Did this partnership make sense for the bumbling-flirtatious brand? Does the campaign mark the brand’s shift from a glamorized Tinder to a symbolic platform of women empowerment? Will this compel more of us hopeless romantics to swipe with confidence? Forbes posted this article balancing the potential pros & cons of this dynamic duo.
Now it’s up for debate whether the campaign will launch in form of a television commercial or purely in tandem with the Superbowl festivities. Whether or not I am successful swiping for love, friendship, or girl boss mentor – it is fair to say that Bumble is on a hot roll on and off the court.
