Love cookies? Wish you could eat them all day long? Dr. Siegal’s Cookie Diet promises to satisfy your sweet tooth and help you shed pounds! I know what you’re thinking…forget Atkins, forget South Beach, forget Special K…give me the COOKIES!!! But, is it safe?
Here’s the skinny on the latest (old) fad…
Founded in 1975, the Cookie Diet just made its way to your local drugstore this year. With celeb beauties like Kim Kardashian and Jessica Simpson singing the diet’s praises, what girl wouldn’t want to try this diet and lose the proposed 10 pounds a month? The Cookie Diet consists of eating six pre-packaged cookies a day paired with a balanced, healthy dinner. Utilizing a “top-secret” amino acid protein blend, the cookies control hunger and help to keep one’s caloric intake low.
If you can’t find them in retailers near you, you can also order cookies, shakes and vitamins through the official Dr. Siegal website, CookieDiet.com. The 1-month starter kit will cost you $236.00, while the weekly box will put you out $59.00. Each cookie has 90 calories, 5 grams of protein, 2 grams of sugar and 150mg of sodium. You can do the math…540 calories for the cookies—add in your well-balanced dinner—and voila! You’ll consume around 1,000 calories (give or take) per day…who knew getting thin was this easy?!?!

The Cookie Diet wouldn’t have the buzz that it does if there wasn’t some controversy surrounding its weight-loss magic. For starters, no one knows exactly what is in the cookies…hmm. A little scary? I think so. Second, dieticians and nutritionists strongly argue that a diet of 1,000 calories in cookies and dinner a day will not lead to long-lasting weight loss results. In fact, it can lead to potassium deficiency, dizziness, gallstones, heart palpitations and all sorts of other not-so-desirable side effects. They claim that fad diets that consist of one food item (ie: everyone’s favorite “grapefruit diet”) can’t meet your nutritional needs and can be detrimental to your well-being after a prolonged period of time. Finally, eating 1,000 calories a day—no matter what you eat—will make you lose weight. So while eating cookies all day long sounds like a party, I think I’ll keep them as a special treat and stick to the lean protein and veggies!
