If your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins live in England (like mine), the Royal Family is a constant topic of conversation. And I often find myself needing to be up to date on all things Royal to contribute to that conversation. Thanks to Instagram, which my family does not participate in, I usually have something interesting to bring up.
If you follow @theroyalfamily on Instagram, you may know that it was created in 2013 and has roughly 4.6 billion followers. The account’s bio reads, “Photos and videos about the work & activities of The Queen & the Royal Family,” and includes a link to its recently-released social media community guidelines. Though the feed consists of curated #tbt photos, social gatherings and some serious wedding inspo, no one in the Royal Family has posted to the account….
Last week the Queen herself posted about her recent visit to the Science Museum, where she discovered a letter written to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert dating back to 1843. The Queen said it was “fitting” that these letters are featured in her first Instagram post as a celebration of how far technology has come in recent years. She also learned about coding initiatives on her visit.

The Queen isn’t terribly new to social media — she tweeted for the first time in 2014 in support of new communication tools.
So, welcome to Instagram, Your Majesty! (DM me if you read this).
