The Show Must Go On – Theater Hits Streaming

Theater buffs, rejoice — Hamilton is coming to Disney+ on July 3rd! Show creator Lin Manuel-Miranda and Disney recently announced that the Broadway hit musical is set to hit the streaming platform more than a year earlier than the filmed stage show was originally planned to be in theaters.
Amid nationwide shutdowns due to COVID-19, it’s no surprise that the film and theater industries have set up shop online. As they say, “the show must go on.” However, this shift toward internet releases has created an unprecedented accessibility to the arts. Yes, streaming services can be expensive, but theater tickets are much more costly, and many are priced out of being able to go to a live performance. Hamilton being available on Disney+ marks a unique opportunity for the industry. If the release is well met, I wouldn’t be surprised if other musicals and plays begin to pop up on popular steaming sites.
Even before the announced Hamilton release, several theaters were beginning to stream their performances online. Similarly, dance studios have begun to offer classes online and Guitar Center is offering lessons. Streaming is allowing a whole new market of people to attend a show or class and explore the arts from their own home.
During this chaotic time, unexpected silver linings keep cropping up. This new run of accessible art is one of them. While nothing can replace the feeling of attending a show in person, I am hopeful theater streams will continue into the new normal and inspire people to pursue creative passions.
