The Wedding of Your #SponsoredContent Dreams

If you’re like me, you love a good rom-com, and right now Mindy Kaling’s new Hulu series, Four Weddings and a Funeral, is one that I will likely turn back to on a rainy day. Four American friends move to London and ride the emotional roller coaster that is love? Sign me up.
As I was watching the most recent episode, the marketer in me got a kick out of the fact that Hotels.com sponsored the episode entirely. Spoiler alert: Craig and Zara finally walk down the aisle, but, in true millennial style, the duo has their entire wedding sponsored by Hotels.com. Zara even sports a Hotels.com-branded veil during her vows, and Captain Obvious, Hotels.com’s spokesperson, is their DJ. It was I C O N I C.
Also during their vows, that are being filmed to appear on television, Zara gets caught off guard by the film director and gets told to 1) Not cry because it’s ruining her makeup (rude) and 2) Not forget to mention Hotels.com and their current deals/savings. It was a great mix of hilarious and tacky.
But this bit from Hotels.com doesn’t stop there. To celebrate their involvement in the episode, Hotels.com is hosting a contest where a couple has the chance to win a honeymoon of a lifetime ($15,000 — more specifically, the company will give you a $10,000 gift card for Hotels.com and an extra $5,000 Visa card to use during your honeymoon). The catch: you must incorporate “Hotels.com” into your actual wedding vows.
The rules are straightforward; have one of your guests film the vows, just the part that mentions Hotels.com, upload it to Twitter or Instagram and tag @hotelsdotcom and use the hashtag #HotelsSponConVows. One winning couple will be chosen by October 1st and the contest lasts from September 15-23.
This isn’t the first campaign that Hotels.com has launched to increase their social engagement, either. Just a few days ago, they also announced that they are searching for a canine hotel critic. One lucky winner and their pooch will win ten free nights at ten pet-friendly hotels of their choice around the world. All you have to do is upload a photo of your furry friend to Instagram tagging @hotelsdotcom and add #CanineCritic to your caption.
If you ask me, Hotels.com hit the nail on the head with both campaigns. Exposure on TV in a lighthearted, comical way, where you know it’s a giant ad but go with it anyway because it not an actual ad (read: commercial), is an interesting way to broaden your audience before launching a bigger campaign. As for the canine critic, who doesn’t love a good dog post? In other words — it’s easy and takes little effort to post a picture of your dog with the above criteria for a chance to win.
So, go fall in love and live out your #SponsoredContent wedding dreams!
