This Is American Beauty
The other day, I received my August issue of Allure in the mail. Not a big deal – it usually gets thrown into my beach bag for casual reading. But this day, Allure caught my attention, because the August cover star is Halima Aden, and the bold text going across the cover says, “This is American Beauty.” Why did this catch my attention? Halima Aden is wearing a hijab – the new Nike athletic hijab to be exact.

Halima Aden is a Somali-American who was born in a Kenyan refugee camp and came to America at the age of six. She is now a stereotype-busting, ass-kicking top model who is also the first hijabi model to be featured on the cover of Vogue and Allure. Why is this so important. Representation in media, my friends. Some of us don’t understand how powerful it is to be a little girl or guy and not see anyone who looks like you on TV or in a magazine – or even worse, if they are, it’s a negative portrayal. This is why Halima’s Allure cover is so epic – now, a young Muslim American girl can now look at the cover of a powerful and prominent form of media and see herself.
So, here’s to Allure and Halima Aden for breaking archaic boundaries when it comes to how America defines beauty. Let’s keep this ball rolling.
