I kept noticing my favorite beauty girls on Twitter (@glambr and @nostasiewski) mention P57 in their tweets. The curious cat that I am, I had to know what they kept referencing. A few Google searches later, I found my answer. Physique 57. Touting itself as being the most effective workout system in New York City, P57 is the talk of the town. Intrigued? So was I.

Physique 57 is “a 57-minute series of exercises that strengthens and stretches every muscle group in the body, using isometric movements, a ballet barre and your own body weight for resistance” (description is courtesy of The result is stronger, leaner and more limber muscles—in layman’s terms—a killer bod. The truth is, Physique 57 has been around for years, but for whatever reason, people are just starting to buzz about it. New Yorkers and fitness enthusiasts worldwide are saying “buh bye” to pilates and yoga and stepping up to the plate or in this case, the barre.

Classes begin with a warm-up that includes upper-body exercises utilizing free weights, push-ups and plank positions. The warm-up focuses on exercises that target the bicep, tricep, shoulder, chest and back muscles. Once their upper-body feels the burn, participants move to the ballet barre and focus on their thighs, seat and abdominal muscles. The difference between P57 and yoga or pilates classes is that you are constantly challenged to increase your strength and stamina through variations of strength building exercises organized in an interval training format. While yoga and pilates work to strength your back and abdominal muscles through floor work-outs, P57 utilizes many standing, weight-baring exercises targeting those same spots while also increasing bone density.

Luckily, for all of us that don’t have the luxury of stopping into one Physique 57’s New York studios, we still have hope for a lean and limber future. Physique 57 offers 57-minute exercise DVDs that you can purchase and perform in your home AND if you’re in a time crunch, Physique 57 also offers a 30 minute exercise video! I mean, with Kelly Ripa singing its praises, how can P57 NOT be famous—have you seen her guns?
