Most 9 to 5er’s spend the vast majority of their work day sitting at a desk, oblivious to the fact that they are drastically increasing their odds of dying in the next three years. That may sound over-dramatic to you — I know it felt over-dramatic to type — but it’s true. People who spend more than 11 hours a day sitting (at work, at the dinner table, on the couch watching Netflix…) are 40% more likely to kick the bucket in the near future than their more active counterparts.

Armed with this eye-opening statistic, and determined to better his chances if the world ever reverts back to a “Survival of the Fittest” model, freelance writer Dan Kois made the heroic decision to stand up constantly for an entire month, all the while documenting the experience for New York Magazine. And stand he did, for 16 to 17 hours a day, throughout the entirety of April, taking no breaks except for the necessary ones: using the bathroom and driving in his car.

Dan’s daily “Standing Diary” entries ranged from optimistic, to frustrated, to resentful. He barely cheated – once accidently and once because he went to a play and was afraid of getting kicked out for being “the weirdo standing in his seat”– and because of that, his perpetually sore calves and aching back reaped the full benefits. In the end, Dan lost five pounds, walked 92.5 miles, found himself being much more productive workwise (instead of diving into the endless Buzzfeed abyss when he hit a creative wall, he would take a stroll around the office), and rekindled an appreciation for sit-down family gatherings.

While you won’t see me standing at lunch or awkwardly shifting from side to side in a meeting, I am definitely inspired to take a more active approach to my daily life. So if you spot me doing stretches at my desk, you know who to blame…
